New to coaching? 5 things to expect

Coaching is a really powerful development tool but if you have never experienced coaching before you might be wondering what it is and how it works.

It’s very different to other types of learning and development where you’re taught what to do.

The coaching conversations I have with my clients are about harnessing what they already know. The conversations help them find the right way forward for them. It’s not about me prescribing solutions.

My clients come to me for different reasons but the thing they all have in common is that they want to improve the performance of themselves, their team and their business.

Perhaps you need to resolve a problem that is giving you a headache?

Maybe you’re feeling stuck and want to get some momentum back in your business?

Or you might feel like you’ve lost your way and need to refocus?

Whatever stage you’re at in your business journey,  coaching can help you.

So, what can you expect when you book a coaching package with me?

1. A safe space

All my coaching conversations are completely confidential. Our sessions are a safe space for you to explore your thoughts and feelings about the issues that you’re facing. When you’re the leader of the team, you need a chance to work through what you think about something before you talk to your team about it.

I am here to be a sounding board and confidante to you. I will listen without judgement, and help you detangle all the thoughts that are whirling round in your head to create the clarity you need to work out a way forward.

2. Lots of questions

The way coaching works is to ask questions to help you work through the challenges you’re facing and reach your goal or desired outcome. I adapt my approach to find the best way to support each client but it’s likely we’ll explore what you want to achieve from coaching, where you feel you are now in relation to that goal and then we’ll work on how you might get there.

Sometimes just talking the situation through out loud is all it takes for you to see that situation differently. We can get so caught up in our own thoughts that we create an echo chamber keeping us stuck in a loop. Other times the process of working through the questions reveals new insights or ideas that unlock the solution for you.

3. To feel uncomfortable

I am here to support you but I will also challenge you, with compassion and understanding of course. I might ask questions to encourage you to look at things from a different perspective. I might challenge assumptions you’ve made or question limiting beliefs or the language you’ve used.

I may even hold you to account for taking action on the things we’ve discussed if that’s what you’ve asked me to do.

Being open and honest with yourself around these things can feel uncomfortable. But, to grow we have to stretch our comfort zones and be open to doing things differently. After all, if you keep doing the same things over and over, you’re likely to get the same results. And I’ll be here to support you every step of the way.

4. To learn about yourself

The best way to influence the people or situations around us is to think about the impact our behaviour and actions are having on them. We’ll explore what is working well for you and what isn’t serving you so well. Depending on the outcome you’re looking for from the coaching we might talk about what is important to you, what motivates you, or how you respond in different situations.

Some of this may already be familiar to you but we all have our blind spots. The more you understand yourself the more opportunity you have to choose how to act and react in situations.  It gives you the awareness that will allow you to break any unhelpful patterns of behaviour that are getting in the way of the outcomes you want to achieve.

5. To come out of the sessions feeling EPIC!

You will leave our coaching conversations feeling EPIC – Empowered, Purposeful, Inspired and Connected.

Empowered to move forward knowing that you came up with a solution that feels achievable and authentic to you.

You’ll be ready to move forward with a clear sense of direction, and with purpose. Inspired to create the change you are looking for, and to try a different approach to help you achieve it, and connected to the vision you are working towards.

Have you ever had coaching before?

Are you ready to take this next step for you and your team?

Hi I’m Jo,

As a business owner I understand how easy it can be to feel overwhelmed by your business. I know how important it is to build a team around you that can support you to bring your vision to life. You need to feel empowered to drive your business forward in a way that feels right for you and avoids burnout.

In a previous life I’ve been the leader of a large team but I have also been a trainer, a facilitator, assessor and coach, all in the leadership space. I now love drawing on my experience to help business owners who are breaking the mould in their industry and doing things differently to discover how to lead their business THEIR way.

The problem is, when you set out to do things differently there isn’t a blueprint to follow. It’s about finding a way that works for you. I provide the tools and support that enable business owners to lead themselves, their business and their team in way that feels authentic and sustainable for them.
